Police suspect a planned act of vandalism occurred at the Pihlajamäki health center, where a 30-year-old man allegedly broke in last week, causing significant water damage by tampering with a fire hydrant. Investigation leader, Crime Commissioner Juha Åkerman from the Helsinki police, shared that while they understand the motive behind the act, they cannot disclose details for investigative reasons.

The suspect has been detained after being arrested at his apartment last Wednesday. According to Åkerman, the individual acted independently, and no other persons are believed to be involved. The police have also conducted a technical investigation, estimating the material damages to exceed €100,000, with additional indirect costs due to the health center’s closure.

Residents of Pihlajamäki will need to seek health services from other facilities for the next few months, as a significant drying and renovation project is required. Preliminary moisture assessments indicate that up to two-thirds of the health center’s premises have been affected. Blow-drying has commenced, including the removal of damp ceilings and ensuring safe electrical usage.

According to Raino Antikainen, the CEO of Real Estate Oy Helsinki, an expanded damage assessment is set to begin, which will inform the bidding process for repairs. He noted that the building’s steel and concrete structure poses no risk of collapse, but it is likely that the repaired facilities will not reopen until next year. This week, residents have been directed to the Jakomäki health center, which was opened with support from Pihlajamäki staff. Starting next Monday, services will transition to the Pukinmäki health center until Pihlajamäki is ready for reoccupation.
