Three swimmers embark on historic relay journey from Vaasa, Finland to Sweden

On Tuesday evening at 8 PM, a remarkable journey began: three swimmers set off from Vaasa, Finland, aiming to cross the Gulf of Bothnia to Sweden. They are swimming as a relay team, departing from Raippaluoto, passing the Valassaaret islands, and toward the Swedish shores. The initiative was born when Ralf Sund, a seasoned politician and union activist, met three enthusiastic swimmers at a veteran swimming championship who dreamed of swimming across the Gulf. Sund, who has a summer cabin in that area, organized the adventure.

This is not a casual outing; the swim is projected to take nearly 24 hours depending on weather conditions. The total distance is approximately 70 kilometers, meaning each swimmer will cover over 20 kilometers. Sund notes, “Sleep will likely be scarce, so endurance is crucial.”

The swimmers—Ira Uusoksa, Mervi Hillukkala, and Johanna Kara—are excited and not intimidated by the 20-kilometer swim, having previously tackled similar or longer distances in open water. They feel well-prepared and eager to get in the water. Uusoksa acknowledges the challenge but believes they will have time to rest and refuel.

The plan is to be on Swedish waters by morning when the water temperature should be at its highest, although forecasts predict it might be around 15 to 16 degrees Celsius. Sund, along with a support crew in a vintage-style boat, will ensure the swimmers’ safety and nourishment. As conditions remained unpredictable at their departure, the team remains optimistic and emphasizes respect for the sea, ready for whatever challenges nature may present. After the swim, Sund has promised the group a relaxing time at his family cottage, roughly a seven-kilometer boat ride from their starting point.
