Astrid Hoem, leader of the Workers’ Youth League (AUF) from Kristiansund, was just 16 years old when she survived the terror attacks on Utøya in Tyrifjorden. She emphasized the importance of continuing to recount and discuss the events of July 22, particularly as younger generations grow up without personal memories of the tragedy.

During her speech at the memorial ceremony held at the government quarter in Oslo and on Utøya, she reflected on the lasting impact of the attacks, which took the lives of 77 people in 2011. Hoem expressed concern regarding the recent reports of teenagers in Norway planning terrorist attacks, remarking that this underscored the necessity of actively opposing hate and defending human dignity.

Hoem, who is stepping down as AUF leader at the national meeting in October, highlighted that many people have clear demarcations of life before and after July 22. She urged those without direct memories of the events to join in shaping the ongoing narrative in the fight against extremism.

Her speech also addressed recent attacks on vulnerable groups, citing incidents such as the al-Noor mosque shooting and the Pride parade attack in Oslo in 2022 as examples of the continued threat of terrorism. Hoem urged people to recognize that silence does not equate to peace, drawing on historical lessons that show how extremism can insidiously infiltrate daily life.

Today marks numerous memorials across the country, reminding us of the importance of remembering July 22 and the individuals who lost their lives, ensuring that history is not forgotten to prevent future tragedies.
