Disparities in burnout treatment highlight unequal healthcare access in Sweden

The lack of understanding around treatment options for burnout leads to significant variability in care from one clinic to another, resulting in uncertainty for patients and creating unequal healthcare access. Evelina Bäcklund Kilito, a resident of Helsingborg who experienced burnout syndrome in 2017 during her pregnancy, has noticed this disparity firsthand. She believes that the quality of care can be better in Stockholm compared to her city. “The treatment you receive depends on where you live in the country,” she stated.

Evelina’s journey toward recovery has been challenging. She has explored various treatments, often having to take the initiative to seek them out herself. Her experiences included cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapy, and green rehabilitation. While she found many of these approaches beneficial, the road to recovery has been lengthy. She wished for more straightforward guidance and felt the necessity to educate herself about her condition. It wasn’t until 2021 that she was finally able to see a rehabilitation coordinator who understood her situation and could provide the support she needed. Currently, Evelina is working part-time at a garden center.

Overall, the issue highlights a pressing need for improved knowledge and consistency in treating burnout syndrome to enhance patient care and outcomes across different regions.
