The municipality of Ölfus is currently addressing unusual comments from First Water regarding additional information they request from Heidelberg, the operator seeking to establish a quarry in Þorlákshöfn. Thorsteinn Víglundsson, spokesperson for Heidelberg in Iceland, expressed surprise at First Water’s demand, emphasizing that all relevant data was already presented in the completed environmental assessment.

First Water is preparing to develop a land-based aquaculture station nearby and has requested further details about potential environmental impacts linked to Heidelberg’s planned quarry, including noise, vibration, dust pollution, and risks related to port operations. This request came after the environmental assessment had already concluded.

Thorsteinn noted that the insinuation of missing information in the environmental report is perplexing, as he believes everything has been properly addressed. He also pointed out the importance of transparency for the local community and stated that they see no issue in reviewing the information once again to ensure completeness.

A decision about the quarry’s construction could potentially be delayed by several months, although Thorsteinn believes the likelihood of the project proceeding remains unaffected. He highlighted that this quarry represents one of the country’s most significant environmental projects, aiming to produce environmentally friendly cement from crushed limestone.

Ultimately, the construction of the factory will depend on a local vote, and no physical work has commenced at the site by Heidelberg.
