The rise in thefts from retail stores has left many merchants feeling helpless, as shoplifting incidents surge beyond previously recorded levels. Authorities report a significant increase in both shoplifting and vehicle break-ins, prompting warnings for the public to secure their belongings.

Stores like 66°Norður have experienced frequent break-ins, including incidents where vehicles were driven into their locations overnight. In response, retailers have increased surveillance, hired security personnel, and provided staff training to combat what appears to be organized crime, with perpetrators often returning to steal systematically.

Police have noted a trend where individuals repeatedly commit thefts, with reports of them stealing items such as entire trollies full of goods. A general observation among many shop owners reveals a marked escalation in stealing, particularly of cosmetics and fragrances, with significant hits noted at stores like Hagkaup.

Sigurður Reynaldsson from Hagkaup expressed frustration at the repeat thefts, indicating that organized crime is taking hold in Iceland. The financial losses incurred due to theft amount to hundreds of millions of Icelandic krónur annually for retailers.

Meanwhile, Þórdís Anna Oddsdóttir from 66°Norður confirmed that the theft of high-demand items, such as jackets and other luxury apparel, is on the rise, necessitating enhanced security measures.

Both retailers emphasized the need for greater security presence, stating that surveillance cameras alone are insufficient deterrents against theft. Continuous efforts are being made to adapt strategies but, despite these measures, current systems may not be adequate to mitigate the concerns surrounding retail theft.
