Tom Vasara, an entrepreneur from Lahti, recently reunited with an old friend, Anssi Vepsä, at a hockey game. Vepsä has made multiple humanitarian trips to Ukraine, which inspired Vasara to take action. “I had two delivery vans, and one wasn’t getting much use. I immediately thought of donating it to Ukraine and joining the trip,” he shared, having already sent a second van filled with essential supplies.

These delivery vans were loaded with tires, loading equipment, fire extinguishers, medical supplies, and clothing. The journey for the green Chevy began with a ferry ride to Tallinn. Vasara noted the severe shortage of various resources in war-torn Ukraine, and he and Vepsä are already planning a third aid trip, this time bringing a four-wheel-drive BMW. “Auto parts are hard to come by in Ukraine. The military provided a list of parts we need to source. Donations are welcome to reduce our personal costs,” he added.

Vepsä, who established his own charity, Yhtäköyttä, dedicated to assisting Ukraine, works with reliable partners in the country to ensure aid reaches those in need. He emphasized the importance of proper documentation for aid shipments to avoid legal issues.

In conversations with locals, Vasara found that Finns are well-regarded in Ukraine. “Showing our Finnish passports at checkpoints was often enough, especially since our vehicles were clearly marked for humanitarian aid,” he said.

The need for assistance is immense, particularly in rural areas. Vepsä’s past trips uncovered a void of international aid presence, with locals expressing gratitude during their aid distributions. Reflecting on their mission, Vasara noted, “We want to ensure Ukraine retains its independence. Our aid is crucial, and the appreciation shown by the people is overwhelming.”
