Bicycle thefts escalate as TRI store in Reykjavík suffers third burglary in six months

In the early hours of this morning, the bicycle store TRI experienced its third burglary in just six months, resulting in the theft of an electric bicycle valued at 1.6 million Icelandic krónur. TRI’s manager, Róbert Grétar Pétursson, suspects that the stolen bikes are quickly being smuggled out of the country due to the challenges of selling them at competitive prices domestically. These electric bikes are imported in limited quantities and primarily serve display purposes.

Earlier this summer, bicycle thefts were prominent in the capital area, with reports of break-ins at five different bicycle shops, resulting in a total of twelve stolen bikes.

Following the recent incident, Róbert expressed the need to review security measures, although he noted that the building housing the store may not easily allow for such upgrades without incurring significant costs. He plans to meet with the property owners soon to discuss potential responses and improvements to security.

The prevalence of bicycle thefts has raised concerns in the community, prompting authorities to increase vigilance and preventative measures in both stores and surrounding areas.
