The head of the treatment center Stuðlar has been placed on an indefinite leave. This decision follows a broadcast by Kveikur that discussed serious conditions at the facility.

Álfur Einarsson, the director of Stuðlar, candidly described the challenging circumstances at the center during the show. The Children and Family Agency has now sent Álfur on indefinite leave from his position.

The broadcast highlighted alarming conditions reported by both staff and former clients, citing excessive stress and complex cases, which pose risks to both children and staff. Álfur explained that the presence of children under custody and those serving sentences can disrupt services for other children. Furthermore, the mixing of children with very different and complicated issues has become quite prevalent.

He also detailed severe and prolonged stress experienced by the staff, noting that in the past four months, seven staff members had suffered injuries due to assaults from clients, making it difficult to ensure safety within the premises.

While the Children and Family Agency did not disclose specific reasons for Álfur’s leave, he confirmed the situation in a brief conversation with the press but declined to comment further, suggesting inquiries be directed to the agency instead.

The agency has not provided additional insights regarding the staff matters when approached for comment.
