Taffel announces reduction in chip bag sizes in Finland

Taffel, a leading snack brand in Finland, is reducing the size of its largest chip bags. Currently, Taffel’s biggest bags weigh 325 grams, but this will change to a new range of 250 to 270 grams. Alongside Taffel, popular chip brands in Finland include Estrella and Pringles, with Estrella’s largest bag at 275 grams and Pringles at 200 grams, making Taffel’s previous offering notably larger.

Nina Olin, Employee and Communication Director at Orkla Finland, which owns the Taffel brand, stated that both sales data and consumer research indicate a demand for smaller chip bags. “These old so-called mega bags are perceived as somewhat too large,” Olin remarked. While larger bags, typically purchased for group gatherings, will still be available, there is a growing preference for smaller sizes among consumers.

The best-selling chip bags in Finnish stores have been analyzed by various sources, including Ilta-Sanomat in 2024 and 2022, as well as MTV Uutiset in 2021, which often highlighted the larger bags from Taffel.

In addition to the downsized largest bags, Taffel will introduce two new smaller sizes as part of its packaging revamp. The new products will gradually appear in stores this autumn and throughout next year. Olin refrained from commenting on whether the prices would decrease as the bag sizes shrink, noting that the pricing agreements between the manufacturer and retailers are confidential. Ultimately, individual stores will determine the retail prices for consumers.
