In a recent address, the leader of the Icelandic Confederation of Labor expressed grave concerns over wage negotiations and overall economic management amid political turmoil. He criticized political leaders for prioritizing party interests over the public good, highlighting that their failure to address inflation effectively has plunged the nation into uncertainty and turmoil.

Finnbjörn Hermannsson, president of the Confederation, made these remarks during the opening of its 46th congress at the Hilton Hotel in Reykjavík. The congress is themed “A Strong Movement for a Strong Society,” covering various issues, including energy policy, competition, and healthcare. However, the current political climate has taken precedence in the discussions among labor movement representatives.

“In a time where it seemed inflation was on the decline and interest rate cuts were on the horizon, the ruling political forces have given up on the mission,” Hermannsson stated. “They have disrupted the government coalition and are offering the nation nothing but uncertainty and chaos.”

He further emphasized that this shift has revealed the true nature of political stability previously touted by leaders, asserting that it could not be maintained without their governance.

Sonja Ýr Þorbergsdóttir, chair of the BSRB, also addressed the congress, reminding attendees of the organization’s inherently political nature. “From the beginning, the Confederation has emphasized politics,” she noted, urging members to remember this as election season approaches, when there may be calls for labor organizations to avoid political discussions. “We are political; we have always been and hope to continue in that vein.”
