Funding cuts raise concerns over drug smuggling oversight in Tórshavn, Faroe Islands

It is unfortunate to cut funding in areas such as market oversight in relation to drug smuggling.

This statement comes from Magni Højgaard, the leader of RÓWT, formerly known as “Megna títt lív.” Højgaard emphasizes the importance of curbing drug smuggling, highlighting that this aspect of substance abuse is the most difficult to manage.

The overall plan initiated in March 2022 to prevent and combat substance abuse has yet to have the desired impact, according to Højgaard.

Ruth Vang, the Minister of Finance, has stated that while Taks will face budget reductions next year, the Ministry of Finance intends to prioritize market oversight in these budgetary adjustments.

Eyðun Mørkøre, the director of TAKS, acknowledged that even though the agency needs to save 700,000 DKK next year, there will be no cuts to its staff. The market oversight will not see a reduction in resources but also will not be strengthened.
