Sweden reports alarming surge in school-related violence and threats over the past decade

An analysis commissioned by the government revealed alarming trends in school-related violence and threats in Sweden. The report, submitted on Tuesday, indicates that from 2013 to 2023, reports of threats or violence have surged by over 152%. In contrast, similar incidents in the broader workforce have increased by just 40%. Approximately 80% of the reports originate from primary schools, involving students threatening or being violent towards school staff.

The issue appears to be widespread across the country, with no significant distinction between private and public schools. Kristian Hansson, the project leader for the analysis, labeled the situation unacceptable. He noted improvements in schools’ reporting of serious incidents over the years but emphasized that the rise in incidents of threats and violence is undeniable. He stated that the increase in work-related accidents involving sick leave further supports the conclusion that conditions have worsened.

The most vulnerable staff members, in terms of sick leave, are student support staff and teaching assistants. Common scenarios involve students acting out when angry or upset, exhibiting behaviors such as biting, hitting, or kicking adults.

To address these challenges, the Swedish Work Environment Authority is proposing mandatory workplace training for school leaders and principals, as well as clearly defined responsibilities for student health services in systematic workplace safety efforts.
